The modern Volos is established on the area of the ancient and magnificent cities of Demetrias, Pagasae, and Iolkos. Its development is linked with the establishment of the industrial estate, improvement of the port, and the increase of tourism in the city because of its geographical position of Volos near scenic Mt. Pelion and the wonderful and pristine beaches of Magnesia prefecture. The city also has schools, lyceums, gymnasiums, churches, banks, post office, and wonderful squares. Volos is also famous for its assortment of mezedes and tasty, clear alcoholic beverage which is called Tsipouro.
