Kaluga is a city in central Russia located at the Oka River on the southwest of Moscow. It was founded in the mid-14th century as a border fortress on the southwestern borders of the Muscovy. During the middle ages, it became a minor settlement owned by the Princess Vorotynsky. Her ancestral home is situated southwest from the modern city. it is connected to Moscow by a railway line and ancient roadway which is called the Kaluga road.
The city was inhabited by the Nazi armies in 1941. It is well-known to be the home of the rocket scientist pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky who worked in the city as a school teacher. A museum was created to honor the famous scientist especially to his theoretical achievements and the implementations for modern space research.
