A region in southeastern Italy, Apulia borders the Adriatic Sea to the east, Ionian Sea to the southeast and the Strait of Otranto and the Gulf of Taranto in the south. The southern portion of Apulia is called Salento which is a peninsula that forms the heel of the Italian boot.

Apulia

It is mostly a plain and its low coast is broken by the mountainous Gargano Peninsula in the north and there are also mountains in the north central potion of Apulia. The chief occupation of the people in Apulia is farming yet the industry has expanded rapidly through the years. The farm products of the region are olives, grapes, cereals, almonds, figs, tobacco and livestock. Some of the manufactured products in Apulia are refined petroleum, chemicals, cement, iron and steel, processed food, plastics and wine.

The region became an important area for the ancient Romans who had conquered Apulia during the 4th century BC. The region’s coast was said to be occupied by the Turks and the Venetians.
