The second-largest city in Slovenia, Maribor lies on the Drava River which is at the meeting point of the Pohorje Mountain, the Drava Valley, and the Kozjak and Slovenske gorice hill ranges.
Maribor is the seat of the Maribor urban municipality and it has a total population of 117,693. It is also the center of the Slovenian region of Lower Styria. It was first mentioned as a market near the castle of Marchburch in 1204 and had received town privileges in 1254. The city was formerly known as the major industrial center of the country but it was systematically bombed by the Allies in the World War II.
Among the places to visit in Maribor are: the 12th century Gothic cathedral and the town hall which was constructed with a touch of Renaissance fashion. It also has the University of Maribor which was established in the year 1961 where it became the home of the oldest grapevine in the whole world called the Stara trta and it is about 400 years old.
