Known as a city and seaport in the Marche, Ancona is one of the regionsin central Italy and it has a total population of 101,909. It is found on the Adriatic Sea and it serves as the center of the province of Ancona and the capital of the region.
It is situated on and between the slopes of two extremities of the promontory of Monte Conero, Monte Astagno and Monte Guasco. It was founded from the Syracuse in 390 BC and its name simply means “elbow.” Ancona has a total area of 123 square kilometers and it is 210 kilometers northeast of Rome and 200 kilometers southeast of Bologna.
Tourists go to Ancona to view some of the remarkable places and landmarks in the town just like the beautiful cathedral of St. Ciriaco which was consecrated in the year 1128 and was completed in the year 1189. There are also several fine late Gothic buildings which include the churches of S. Francesco and S. Agostino, the Palazzo Benincasa, Palazzo del Senato and Loggia dei Mercanti.
