Situated on a thin strip of land approximately 3 km between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus mountains, Derbent is polulated by 101,031 people comprising mainly of Azeris, Lezgins and Tabasarans ethnic groups.
With claims referring the city as the oldest in Russian Federation, the city is often identified with the legendary Gates of Alexander. It features various archaeological structures over 5000 years old. Along the years, the city had different names given by its people yet it is still referred to the word “bridge.” Derbent also served an essential role in spreading Christianity in the Caucasus during the 5th and 6th Centuries.
Derbent is a famous home of the machine building, food, textile, fishing and fishery supplies, construction materials, and industries. It also is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
