BielefeldKnown as the biggest city of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, Bielefeld is a district-free town in the Regierungsbezirk Detmond in Germany. Its name is derived from the old name bileveld which simply means “hilly field.”

The town was founded in the year 1214 and it was a minor member of the Hanseatic League since the 14th century. It was also in that century when Bielefeld profited greatly from its status as the city of linen. The major industries in the town are food processing, home appliance manufacture, information technology and heavy industries. It was in the year 1973 when the first villages on the opposite side of the Teutoburg Forest were incorporated.

Sparrenburg Castle is among the beautiful sites to visit in the Bielefeld. The castle was built between 1240 and 1250. There is also the Old City Hall which was built in the year 1904 and it has the Gothic style and of the Renaissance. The town is also said to be the seat of the two largest Protestant social welfare establishments in Europe.
