A well known celebration in Netherlands, Koninginnedag was originally a festivity for the queen’s birthday but today, it is to celebrate vrijmarkt or literally known as free market. It is a one day event in a year where anybody us allowed to sell anything in the street and the koninginnenacht or Queen’s Night is done the preceding night.
The celebration is a typical festivity for oranjegekte or orange craze. Orange is considered as an omnipresent sight in the country and it refers to the name of the Dutch royal family which is the House of Orange. The banners are colored orange as well as the food and drinks.
Among the activities held during this day is the freemarket. It is related to a nationwide car boot sale or a Flea market. The items in this freemarket are traditionally sold in old rubbish and the commercial trades consider this event as an extremely profitable day.
