Simply known as the capital of the state of Thuringia, Erfurt is a wonderful city in central Germany.

Erfurt

Erfurt lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin and it is the main city nearest to the geographical center of Germany. During the middle ages, the city served as an important trading town which is near a ford across the Gera River. Unlike the other major cities in the country, Erfurt had suffered only limited damage during the Allied air raids in the World War II. The city is also a significant population center that followed the Black Plague across Europe.

Erfurt had amazingly maintained an intact medieval city center until today. That is why there are a lot of tourists who are intrigued with the city and ends up roaming and checking out the whole city. The city is symbolized by the Mariendom and Severikirche which are both churches standing directly side by side and they form the emblem of Erfurt.
