A well known city in northern Hungary, Eger is famous for its castle, thermal baths, historical buildings and the finest Hungarian red wines. Its name was derived from the Hungarian word egerfa which means alder tree.
It is a prospering town and also a famous tourist destination with a beautiful Baroque town center. Eger is a Roman Catholic archiepiscopal see and also an Ecclesiastical province of the country. It has been inhabited since the Stone Age.
Aside from its beautiful and historical sights and spas, the city is well known for its wines. The Eger Wine Region is said to have a great potential to produce high quality white and red wines. Among its famous wines are the Egri Leanyka, Egerszolati Olaszrizling, Debroi Harslevelu and the Egri Bikaver. There are also a lot of places to visit in Eger and some of these are the Castle of Eger, Minaret, Dobo Square, Turkish Bath, Archbishop’s Garden and The Fazola Gate.
