It is the capital of District of Berat and the larger County of Berat. It is situated on the right bank of the river Osum. It has also pine forests found above the city particularly on the slopes of the towering Tomori Mountains.

Berat is known have historic architecture and scenic beauty which is also known as the “Town of a Thousand Window.” It was named so because of the numerous large windows of the old decorated houses that overlooks the town. Visitors are invited to see the beauty of this place every now and then.
