Widely known as the capital of the county of Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok, Szolnok is found in central Hungary. It has been inhabited since the ancient times by the Scythians, Celts and Avars. It was in the 10th century when the Hungarians were said to have settled in the area.
Szolnok was named after the steward of its castle and in the Mongol invasion, the town became deserted. During the World War I and II Szolnok had suffered a lot and experienced heavy bombing in the year 1944. It was in the Socialist era when the town began to prosper again. There were factories built and the town’s tourist importance grew just as when a thermal bath was opened.
The town was granted the rank of city with county rights in November 1990. Among the remarkable sights to see in Szolnok are the Bath, Museum of Hungarian Aviation and the Damjanich Janos Museum.
