Fulda

A city in Hesse, Germany, Fulda is situated on the Fulda River and it is the administrative seat of the Fulda district.

Fulda was founded by Saint Sturm in 744. It served as one of Boniface’s outposts on the reorganization of the church in the country and also as a base from which missionaries accompanied Charlemagne’s armies in their political and military campaign. It was in 18th century when Fulda went through baroque building campaign which led to the current “Baroque City” status. In 1764 to 1789, the city had a porcelain factory and due to its quality and rarity, many collectors had treasured them all.

The city lends its name to the Fulda Gap which is a traditional east-west invasion route that was used by Napoleon and others. The former East/West German border passed just east of Fulda and the big Soviet and East German force were then stationed in the area in the Cold War.
