Known as the second largest island of Estonia, Hiiu County borders Laane County to the east and Saare County to the south. It was in the 5th millennium BC when the county was inhabited.
There are few grave fields which can be still seen in the county today and are well preserved from the Iron Age. In the year 1228, Hiiu County was first mentioned in wriiten annals in Dageida. Hiiu or also known as Hiiumaa was then divided between the Livonian Order and the Bishopric of Osel-Wiek in the year 1254. The county was under the control of the Russian Empire during 1710.
The farm architecture concepts were created in the 14th century and some of these farms are the Mihkli farming complex and the Soera farm-museum- houses the onld national artifacts. Among the places that one could visit in the couty are Suuremoisa manor, Kopu lighthouse and ancient caves, Suursadama port, Tahkuna lighthouse and coastal defenses.
