The Danish people are those who have an ancestral or ethnic living in Denmark. These Danes are said to be descendants from different ancient Germanic tribes who reside in modern day Jutland, Sweden and on Danish Islands. There are almost five million ethnic Danes who live in the country today.
They are a Scandinavian ethnic group and are known to be descendants of the Norse or well known as the Vikings. They are also descendants of the Norwegians, Swedes, Icelanders, Faroese and English.
The Danish people played a significant role during the 19h century ethnic nationalism and refer to self-identification than a legal status. Det danske folk or The Danish People is a restricted term in a historical context. The term describes the people of Danish nationality in Denmark and anywhere else but most importantly the ethnic Dances in the country proper and also in the former Danish Duchy of Schleswig.
