A historical country in southeastern Europe, Greece is officially called the Hellenic Republic. It is located on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula.
The beautiful shores of the Aegean Sea of the country became a witness of emergence of the first advanced civilizations in Europe. The country is made up of mountainous and rocky mainland protruding out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans. The mythical Mount Olympus is also the highest mountain in Greece and it is situated in the southwestern Pieria prefecture which is near Thessaloniki.
The culture of Greece evolved for thousand years from the Mycenean and Minoan civilizations, Classical Greece, Hellenistic era, Roman Empire influence, up to the Byzantine Empire. Another leadership had greatly influenced the Greek culture and that is the Ottoman Empire. The ancient Greece is said to be “the cradle of Western civilization.” There are also many beautiful and well-preserved places to be seen in the country.
