BratwurstThe bratwurst is a kind of sausage which is made of pork, beef, and there are also times when the Germans make use of the veal. Its name is derived from the Old High German bratwurst where brat refers to the finely chopped meat the word wurst means sausage.

The most common ways of cooking a bratwurst is through grilling and it is also cooked in broth or beer. The dish originated from Thuringia and it was in the year 1432 when the oldest recipe of the bratwurst was known. There are also regional variations in cooking the bratwurst in the country.

During the World War I, the bratwurst was known as the “liberty sausage” just as when the anti-German sentiment increased in the United States. The oldest restaurant which offers bratwurst is the Wurstkuhchl. The restaurant today serves as a good tourist attraction and they still roast the sausage in the traditional way.
