Situated in southeast of Jutland peninsula, Vejle is a picturesque town which is famous for its forested hills which rise up to the north and south of the town and fjord.
Because of the city’s location at significant crossroads at a ford over Vejle River, it was formerly known as Waethelae which means ford. Even in the early times, Vejle played an important role being a merchant town at busy crossroads and currently, it serves as a significant junction for road and also rail transport. It was first established on an islet where the small Vejle and Grejs River had converged before emptying into the Vejle Fjord.
Among the famous landmarks in the city is St. Nikolai’s Church. There is also a windmill built on the slopes of the hills of the town which is noticeable from almost everywhere in the city. Vejle is also an industrial center and it has a big shipping port.
