A wonderful yet simple town on the Coast of Thrace, Abdera lies in the Xanthi Prefecture of modern Greece. The mythical foundation of the town is credited to Heracles.
The prosperity of the town dates from 544 BC just as when the people of Teos had migrated to Abdera to be able to escape the Persian yoke. It was in 513 BC when the town was conquered by the Persians. In the later times, Abdera was then part of the Delian League and had fought for the Athens during the Peloponnesian war.
Abdera had noticeably declined in importance during the 4th century BC. If you want to see the ruins of the historical town, you can visit Cape Balastra. In it, you will see seven small hills which cover the ruins that extend from eastern to western harbor and on the southwestern hills, remains of the medieval settlement of Polystylon will be seen.
