Polka is a kind of dance and is also a genre of music which originated in Bohemia. It is still a common genre of Czech and the Slovenian folk music.

Polka

The name polka is derived from the Czech word pulka which means half and it is related to the half rhythm in the music. Polka is demonstrated or executed in different styles. It was in the 1980s and 1990s when several bands started to combine polka with different rock styles and these are referred as punk polka, alternative polka or San Francisco-style. There are also different countries in Europe which adopted polka and they have also come to their unique flavor of music.

Even if polka originated in Bohemia, most of the music composers of the music genre came from Vienna. The Strauss family residing in Vienna is famous for their waltzes and composed polkas. Emile Waldteufel is also a composer of polka who came from France and he also makes good compositions of waltz. The dance then evolved into different styles and tempi.
