Welcome to Joensuu, a well known city in eastern Finland. It is situated in the province of Eastern Finland and it is part of the North Karelia region. The city was founded in the year 1848 and it has a total population of 58,000.
Joensuu was founded by the Czar Nicholas I of Russia and it serves as the center of the region and also the capital of North Karelia. It was in the 19th century when Joensuu was known as a city of manufacture and commerce. It has been referred to as the Forest Capital of Europe due to the European Forest Institute which is based in the city. There are also other forestry research and educational facilities in the city.
The city is also known for its high standard universities. The city has the University of Joensuu which is among the secrets for the vitality and progress of the city and of North Karelia. There are a lot of export companies in the city which still continue traditions in foreign trade of the 19th century.
