Welcome to Campobasso, the capital city of the Molise region in Italy. It is situated in the high basin of the Biferno River and is surrounded by the Sannio and the Matese mountains.
The place is well known for the craftsmanship of blades which include scissors and knives. Campobasso is also popular for the production of pears as well as scamorza. It was founded before the 18th century as a fortified camp by the Lombards and its original name was Campus vassorum which simply means that the city was in origin the seat of the vassals of the Duke of Spoleto. It was in the October and November 1943 when the place became the center of fights between the Allies and the German troops.
Many tourists visit Campobasso to watch and explore some of its splendid places like the Castello Monforte which was built in the year 1450 by the local ruler Nicola II Monforte. Campobasso also has the wonderful Chiesa della Madonna del Monte which is said to have been erected in the 11th century and was then rebuilt in the year 1525.
