Found on the coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark, Esbjerg serves as a large transport hub for rail and highway traffic. It is also a significant port for Danish North Sea oil offshore activity.
Esbjerg has an airport and is also known as the center for machine building. It has numerous museums, theatres and well maintained libraries. The city was established around the harbor where the state had built in the year 1868 as a replacement for that harbor found in Altona which previously became the country’s most important North Sea harbor. It was in the year 1874 when the city was connected by rail to Fredericia and Varde. It has been elected twice as “City of the Year” and it was in the year 1997 when it was awarded due to the corporate work between public and private companies.
Esbjerg was once the country’s largest fishing harbor and the said harbor is still an economic driving force in the town.
