Situated on the local banks of the Saale in the northeastern corner of the German state of Bavaria in the region of Franconia, Hof serves as the district’s administrative seat.

The town is also called Bavarian Siberia due to its temperatures which are usually several degrees lower than in most other parts of the beautiful Bavaria especially in winter. Hof is enclosed by the Bavarian district but is not part of the said district. The city is famous for its two local delicacies which are the Schnitz, a hotpot dish with sausages boiled in a portable brass cauldron and there and the strong beer which is called Schlappenbier and it is available only on the first Monday after Trinity Sunday.
Hof’s most important work of art which is the Hofer altar dates from 1465 is exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich in the present time. There is also the Heidenreich organ found in the parish church of Michaelis which was completed in the year 1834. It is regarded as one of Bavaria’s finest.
