A region in the south of Italy, Basilicata is divided into two provinces namely, Potenza and Matera. It is about 9,992 square kilometers in size and it has a total population of about 600,000. The region borders Campania to the west, Puglia to the east, Calabria to the south and the Ionian Sea to the southeast.Basilicata

Basilicata is a whole mountainous and because of this, communications are difficult in the region. It was in the Roman times when the district was known as Lucania and it was still administered together with Bruttium. During 90-88 BC, Basilicata was given up to pasture and the mountainous areas were covered with forests that were abounded in wild boars, bears and also wolves.

During the early times Basilicata is said to be the least developed provinces of the country but because of the discovery of oil, Basilicata has become richer over the past couple of years.
