The traditional music of Estonia was divided into two periods. The runic songs of the country refer to the older folksongs and these songs are written in the poetic meter regivarss. Then in the 18th century, the rhythmic folksongs came to existence.Estonian music

It was in the 19th century when professional Estonian musicians had emerged in the country and this was also the time of the Estonian national awakening. The Estonian runo-song are recorded and studied and they also come into forms such as work songs, ballads and epic legends. The traditional wind instruments also became widespread as these are frequently used by shepherds.

Other instruments in the country include fiddle, zither, concertina and the accordion and these are used to play polka and other dance music. They also have the kantele which is a native instrument that is famous among Estonian-Americans. Some of the Estonian kannel musicians are Igor Tonurist and Tuule Kann.
