Cave Bear

Known as species of bear that lived in Europe in the Pleistocene, the cave bear had become extinct at the end of the last ice age which is about 20,000 years ago. There are a lot of caves in the continent which were found to have skeletons of the cave bears on display.

The cave bear is 30% bigger than the brown bear and the most visible different between them is the steeper forehead of the cave bears. The bear is an omnivore, eating herbs, grass, berries and honey. It was the Paleolithic hunter who had intensively hunted the bears. However, the extinction of the bears did not root from them. It was the reduction of the forests during the last glacial period which had greatly affected the number of the cave bears.

It is said that the cave bears were worshipped by some of the prehistoric Europeans where shrines and altars are found with cave bear-like carvings.
