Making Steps on Umbria

UmbriaHaving a total area of 8,456 square kilometers, Umbria is among the 20 regions of Italy and has a total population of 900,000. It is found in Central Italy and is bordered by Tuscany to the west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south.

Umbria is mostly hilly or mountainous and its relief is said to be dominated by the Apennines to the east. It is named for the Umbri Tribe who were said to have settled in the region during the protohistoric times. It was in the year 1927 when the actual borders of the region were fixed during the creation of the province of Terni and the separation of the province of Reiti.

The industry of the region is based on the steel factories of Terni which harness the hydroelectric power of the Marmore Falls which was made by the Romans, the food industry of Perugia, the production of olive oil and wine. Tourism in the region also serves a significant factor in Umbria’s economy.
