Minsk: Making it Big

Minsk is regarded as the capital as well as the largest city in Belarus. It is located on the Sviclach and Niamiha rivers and it serves as the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Independent States. It has a special administrative center of Minsk voblast and the Minsk raion.

It is situated on the southeastern slope of the Minsk Hills which is a region of rolling hills that run from the southwest to the northeast. Minsk is said to have a moderate climate and its weather is unstable. The city is the economic capital of the country and it has developed industrial and services sectors that serve the needs of the whole country.

It has more than 250 factories and plants and it was in the 1860s when its industrial development began. Wandering in the city is never difficult for there is an extensive public transport system in Minsk. Visitors and local passengers are served by 8 tramway lines, over 70 trolleybus lines and over 100 bus lines.
