Mykolaiv is the administrative center of the Mykolaiv Oblast as well as of the Mykolaivsky and Zhovtnevy districts. It was founded in the year 1789 by the Russian governor general of Novorossiya Knyaz Potemkin. The governor general had signed an order to construct a shipyard on April 27, 1789 that is also regarded to be a city birth date. The shipyard was also built to serve for the repair of the Russian Navy ships during the Russo-Turkish war.
Mykolaiv’s history was always associated to the ship building and the only Russian aircraft carrier currently in commission is the Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov was proudly built in the city. Mykolaiv is currently a major ship building center of the country and is also an important river port.
