An autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty, Mariehamn serves as the seat of the government and parliament of Aland. It was named after Maria Alexandrovna who was the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia. It was in the year 1861 when the town was founded and it was that time when Mariehamn was still part of the municipality of Jomala.Mariehamn

Mariehamn is situated on a peninsula and it has two significant harbors. The town is also considered as an important center for Aland media. The city features buildings which are drawn by Finnish architect Lars Sonck- moved to Aland as a child. His building drawings include the church of Mariehamn, the main building of the Aland Maritime College and the town hall.
