A municipality in Region Midtjylland on the Jutland peninsula in Western Denmark, Herning has been formerly called “The Capital of the Heath.”
The town was established at the beginning of the 1800s in the period of heath reclamation. It was at this time when the population of the town had grown and the demand for products and services to the new farmers had increased. Thus, the town was the center of commerce for the area. As time passes by, Herning became famous for the textile weaving industry and it became the town’s principal economic activity.
It was in the year 1913 when Herning became a market town. In the year 1965 and 2003, the town was hailed as the Danish City of the Year. The town is said to be the home to Messecenter Herning which is the largest exhibition center in Scandinavia. There is also the Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt’s museum of art which is also known as Herning Art Museum and it is one of the major attractions in the city.
