Herne is a city in Germany which is situated in the Ruhr area directly between the beautiful cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen.
In 19th century, Herne was still a tiny village but then not later that time, mining of coal and production of steel had emerged in the town leading to the becoming of the villages in the Ruhr into cities. Herne currently includes the former settlements of Herne, Wanne and Eickel. It was in the 11th and 12th centuries when farms which bear these names were founded. The first coal mine had started its operation in the year 1860. Just as when the population increased thirty years after the mine industry started, Herne was then called a city.
