The highlands are sparsely populated and the area has numerous mountain ranges which dominate the region. It was before the 19^th century when the area became the home to a much larger population because of a combination of factors that include outlawing of the traditional Highland way of life that followed the Second Jaobite Rising and the mass migration to urban areas in the Industrial Revolution. Inverness serves as the administrative center of the Highlands.

The entire area was said to be covered by ice sheets in the Pleistocene ice ages. The complex geomorphology of the Highlands includes incised valleys and lochs which were carved by the action of mountain streams and ice.
