A traditional bread-like cake made in Germany, Stollen is a kind of fruitcake that is made out of yeast, water and flour. Dried citrus peel, dried fruit, almonds and spices like cardamom and cinnamon are added into it. The cake is often sprinkled with icing sugar and it usually weighs about 12 kilograms.
The Stollen is commonly eaten every Christmas as Weihnachtsstollen or Christstollen. It was originally made in the year 1450 and Dresdner Stollen is the most well known Stollen in the country. Its old name was Striezel that means “loaf of bread.” The shape was actually made to symbolize baby Jesus who was wrapped in swaddling clothes.
Stollen is currently available in numerous parts of the world. However, the authentic or official Stollen is made only by 150 bakers. It was in the year 2000 when the largest Stollen was baked and it weighed 4.2 tons and it is in the Guinness Book of World Records.
