Czech Republic is also composed of many historical places that are now popular among tourists. One of these places is Terezín.
Terezín’s name is derived from a former military fortress and garrison town. It is situated at the Ústí nad Labem Region of Czech Republic. It was a fortress built in 1780 and was used as a prisoner-of-war camp during the World War I. Thousand supporters of Russia was put by Austro-Hungarian authorities in the fortress.
In World War II, the Gestapo used Terezín as a concentration camp. The Jews sent were scholars, professionals, artists, and musicians. They were encouraged to live creatively and there were also concerts done in the place. Terezín was liberated on May 9, 1945 by the Soviet Army.
Today, Terezín still retains a military garrison. It is striving to decouple from its military past and aims to become a modern and vibrant town. It is famous its production of furniture and knitwear.
