Welcome to Liguria, a well known coastal region found in northwestern Italy. It is said to be the third smallest region in the country and its capital is Genoa.
Liguria’s economy is based on tourism, olive oil, wine making, fisheries and other industrial sectors like yacht construction and maintenance, cruise liner building, military shipyards, glass and ceramics making, slate extraction and manufacturing and locomotive building. It was in the 1950s and 1960s when the steel industry became a major industry in the region yet in 1970s and 1980s, the country moved away from heavy industry and settled to light industrial productions.
It borders France to the west, Piedmont to the north and Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany to the east. The coast of Liguria has a typical Mediterranean climate and rainfall is abundant at times. Even if the region has high population density, the woods still cover almost half of the total area.
