Makes up one of the three major wonderful landscapes in Switzerland, the Swiss plateau covers almost 30% of the surface in Switzerland. It is found alongside the Jura Mountains as well as in the Alps. The plateau composes the regions found in between the Jura and the Alps and it is the most populated region of the country. The Swiss plateau is also said to be the most significant when it comes to economy and transportation.
It is delimited geographically by the Jura Mountains and in the south, there is however no clear border with the Alps. The plateau is part of a larger basin which extends beyond the border of the country. It has a length of about 300 kilometers and the plateau’s width increases from west to the east. Its base level is crystalline basement that outcrops in the middle crystalline Alps and in the Black Forest and the Vosges mountain range.
