Volga RiverHailed as the largest river in Europe, Volga River flows through the western part of Russia and it is widely known as the national river of Russia. It is said that some of the largest reservoirs in the whole world can be seen along the Volga.

The river belongs to the closed basin of the Caspian Sea and it also serves as home to pelicans, flamingoes and lotuses. It freezes for most of its length every three months of the year. Reservoirs of the river provide irrigation as well as hydroelectric power to the area. Aside from that, the fertile river valley provides big quantities of wheat and it has also a lot of minerals.

The Volga River is also significant to inland shipping and transport in Russia where all the dams in the river have been equipped with big ship locks. It is also expected that vessels coming from other nations will be permitted on the Russian rivers soon.
